Product Description Herod was Rome's most important and powerful ally at the end of the Republic and during the first years of Augustus' principate. He has entered posterity as a ruthless ruler against both his own family and, according to the gospel of Matthew, as the instigator of the slaughter of the innocents. He was also an able administrator, however, and succeeded in developing a powerful army. At its peak, Herod's army could field approximately 40,000 men. This book offers a fascinating look at this ancient army using the latest Israeli archaeological reports and finds, including weapons and armor fragments.

| Customer Reviews: An enlightening look into 1st Century Judea January 6, 2010 K. Murphy (The thriving metropolis of Masury, OH) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This fascinating volume explores the organization, ethnic composition, and major campaigns of the army of Herodian Judea from the late 1st Century BC until the First Jewish Revolt in 69 AD. It reveals the diverse and surprising origins of many of Herod's soldiers - including Jews, Arabs, and Celtic, Galatian, Thracian, and Germanic mercenaries- and is supported by colorful depictions of these warriors.
A fresh view January 2, 2010 Col Benton (NSW Australia) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Most people would only know of Herod as the evil king who ordered the slaying of the children of Bethlehem, however there is much more to this man than just this incident. A very astute politician and soldier who actually had significant support from the local Jews, especially considering he was not Jewish himself. The number of Jewish troops in his army and that this army was considered reliable is a significant tell in itself. The only criticism would be maybe the addition of a couple of organisational charts for the army.
